How many windows do I need for my room?

In this article, we’re looking at how many windows you need to bring warmth and brightness into a room and some clever solutions to make the most of it throughout the day.

Size is a huge factor 

Whether your space is a tiny box room or a huge multi-use space, natural light plays a vital part in letting a room breathe. 

To maximise on the amount of natural light your room is getting, window space should make up about 20% of the total room size. For example, if you have a room that’s 8m x 8m, the total room size is 64m – your windows should then cover 12.8m. 

If you have artwork or photos that you’d like to hang, traditional windows can get in the way. However, by thinking a little more creatively and installing a skylight, you can really make the most of the space you have available.

 

Using your ceiling space with a skylight 

When considering the space they have for windows, many people forget to look up. Roof space is hugely valuable if you’re looking to maximise on light. In fact, skylights can give you three times more natural light than standard windows – while giving you back walls for shelving, artwork or a feature pieces.

Skylights also allow you to reduce the amount of electric lights you need in a room, helping you save on even more wall space (while controlling the amount of electricity you need to use).

Taking advantage of directional light 

To optimise on the amount of natural light you can enjoy, consider the function of your room and when you’ll be using it, paired with the direction your home faces. Positioning a skylight beneath the sun when you’re most likely to be using a room lets you take advantage of the light at its most beautiful.

North-facing rooms generally have a colder, more neutral light throughout the day. While South-facing spaces benefit from warm light all day long.

For East-facing rooms, you’ll find the light is brightest first thing in the morning. But for West-facing rooms, you’ll get long shadows and beautiful warm light as you move into late afternoon.
