3 key things to look for in your skylight supplier.

In the construction and glazing industry, it's fair to say there are a few bad applies who the false impression that the industry is full of cowboys and "dodgy" companies. There are however a great many good apples - reliable companies proving high quality products at great lead times and prices. Unlike the 70's, 80's and 90's where companies could get away with It, now there are some fantastic organisations that do a great deal upholding installer standards across the industry. These organisations give the consumer better protection and better peace of mind before placing an order with a builder or an installer. So when it comes to building your new build home or a new extension to your home, use these tools to ensure you choose the right builder or installer. When it comes to choosing a skylight supplier, you can either get your builder or installer to order the skylight or order it yourself. 

As we are not an installer, these things above do not strictly apply to us. As your builder will probably be installing the skylight, you only really need to be concerned with the product we supply and with the lead time it comes with. So here's three key things to factor in when choosing your next skylight supplier.

1. Product quality

You need to ensure that the product you are buying will stand the test of time, in terms of weight loadings and colour. You can check with the skylight supplier that their skylight is BBA approved or similar, which tells you it has been assessed by a government body for robustness and thermal performance. This is important when you consider that the skylight could be under heavy snow and subjected to fairly extreme weather conditions here in the UK.

2. Lead time

Building homes or extensions is already a stressful and time-precious endeavour, without adding a load more stress with a skylight supplier that takes 4-6 weeks to deliver a skylight. This slows down the build, making it more difficult to get the building watertight and also creates a potential burglary risk with an open hole in the roof covered with some flimsy board.
