What are all the options available for flat roof?

If you’re thinking about adding a skylight to your property, there are a number of considerations you need to bare in mind. From the style of the frame to the positioning in your room, the right skylight can bring all the benefits of natural light into your home. But what if your property has a flat roof?

Traditionally, worries about drainage, leaks and damaged ceilings were enough to put many off the idea of installing a skylight on a flat roof. However, with huge advancements in technology and new fitting techniques, these issues are no longer a problem.

In this post, we’ll help to put your mind at rest with all the installation options you have for adding a flat roof skylight to your home.

Skylight styles

To start, it’s worth taking the time to consider what style of skylight you’d like to install. A new skylight can bring a stylish aesthetic to your home – and it’s sure to make any guests look up when they enter a room.

Although we can install our Pyramid and Lantern skylights to a flat roof, we’d recommend exploring the options in our Flat Skylight range first:

Square and rectangular styles: Our classic style for flat roofs, square or rectangular skylights channel light down over specific areas of your room. This helps to illuminate certain spots such as countertops or seating areas.

Circular styles:  If you’d like something with a bit more of a wow factor, consider a circular skylight. Circular skylights have an ultra-modern feel about them and always manage to catch the eye.

Walk-on roof styles: If you’d like your skylight to be on a balcony terrace then walk-on glass is for you. Step out and feel like you’re floating on air with this skylight style.

Bespoke styles:  From triangular to octagon-shaped styles, our flat roof skylights can be custom-made to your requirements and sizing.

Opening types

Adding a skylight to your flat roof instantly allows light to fill the space – bringing natural brightness to even the darkest corners of your room. With all this new light, you need to make sure your room has proper ventilation so it doesn’t become a greenhouse. Being able to open a skylight helps to bring a healthy airflow to your home, flushing out those airborne germs that have a habit of sticking around.

When you install an Express Skylight to a flat roof, we offer a number of different opening options depending on your needs. Our manual opening skylights are installed so that they can be opened by hand or by a pole (depending on the height of your room). By using a range of gears, manual opening skylights glide open without the need for excessive strength. Our electrical opening skylights benefit from a selection of motors that gently open and close the glass, making it even easier to manage the air circulation in your home.

Glass types

Along with the style and opening types of your new flat roof skylight, you also need to consider the type of glass you’d like to use. As standard, we offer self-cleaning glass in all of our skylights. With a chemical formula that coats the outer layer of the glass, the glass reacts with rain water that makes it viscous. Any dirt is then carried away when it rains. We offer two different colour coatings for our self-cleaning options: clear or blue. A blue-tinted glass reflects the sun’s solar energy, helping to keep rooms cool. It also reduces solar glare and damaging UV rays that can fade furnishings.

We’re also able to offer triple glazing in our flat roof skylights – a great option if you’re looking into ways to make your home more energy efficient.
